Isma is a second-year Masters student in Political Studies at the University of Saskatchewan, specializing in international relations and political theory. She holds a BA from the University of Calgary. Her research focuses on the intersection of power and knowledge, particularly in media portrayals of conflict zones. She is especially interested in how these portrayals may shape perceptions of actors in these regions and influence conflict dynamics, working against conflict resolution. As a research assistant, Isma has contributed to projects that align with her academic interests, particularly in decolonizing knowledge and advocating for those affected by conflict. She is deeply committed to supporting marginalized communities through both her academic work and volunteer efforts.
In the past, she has volunteered with immigrant groups in Canada, providing translation services, and has provided essential support to senior citizens through the Calgary Seniors' Resource Society. Isma’s interest in studying politics and global affairs is rooted in her father’s experiences growing up in Syria. His stories and passion for political dialogue inspired her to care deeply about the challenges and complexities of global issues.
